CHRIS' NOTHING IN PARTICULAR PAGE
It's a funny old game this Euchre. People often ask me what the secret of
winning is? I don't really know the answer, Is it skill, luck, reading the game?
One thing I always say to new players is don't be afraid to shout, even if your
hand of cards look weak don't forget you have 5 cards, your partner has 5 cards
and their are 5 cards sleeping You won't win if you don't shout.
What
makes Euchre enjoyable? Going out for a drink or several. A good bit of food
afterwards. Meeting people and
having a good natter. What do think?
How
do you learn how to play Euchre? is a common question asked, usually from
someone watching over your shoulder and wondering what on earth is happening.
The answer is, sit down and play. You won't learn by just watching. People are
usually very willing to show you what to do.
It
would be interesting to find out if other places in the world are as
enthusiastic about euchre as we are in the St Austell area. All things considered, we
have 50 teams of 6 players which if my sums are correct make 300
people playing euchre on Thursday nights. Then there are the local tournaments
on other days of the week. I sometimes ask people what they do on Thursdays in
the summer when our league shuts down and the usual reply is "don't be
silly Chris, there's
always somewhere to go for a game of euchre"
Get
rid of the big cards is what I say. If your partner makes trumps and you win the
first round, if you have the Benny or Bowers, lead them to your partner so that
he knows where they are. It can make his play so much easier. The same can be
said if a suit is lead and you haven't got a card of that suit. If you have two
trumps, say the Benny and a nine or ten hit the suit with your Benny. It will
bring a smile to your partners face, you can then lead your smaller trump back
to your partner.
To be continued. By the way, that's me on the
right at the top of the page not the left.
If anyone has any tips or thoughts on Euchre I don't mind if you want to send them to me.
